Spinal Decompression FAQs

If you have back pain, mobility becomes a problem and even doing simple tasks like driving or sleeping is challenging. Whether your back pain is minor or severe, it’s vital to see a chiropractor for professional treatment. At RCMC Chiropractic Center, we offer the treatment people in and around Rancho Cucamonga need to naturally recover from back pain. One non-invasive treatment we use for back pain is spinal decompression. Here are a few common questions patients have about spinal decompression.

What is spinal decompression, and how does it work?

This computer-aided therapy uses a special traction table to create negative pressure in your spinal discs. The negative pressure in the spinal column helps to reposition herniated discs, lifting pressure off the pinched nerves and other tissues. Spinal decompression also increases blood circulation in the injured spinal discs, helping to deliver oxygen, fluids, and other nutrients essential for healing to the affected area.

Patients undergoing spinal compression are fitted with a harness designed to generate optimal decompression in the back and neck. During your treatment, you will feel your spine lengthening. This therapy is absolutely painless, but there is a safety switch you can press if you feel any discomfort.

Each session takes about 30 minutes, but you may need several sessions to benefit from the treatment. But because patients’ needs are different, your chiropractor will devise a personalized plan that is best for your individual needs.

What are the conditions treated by spinal decompression?

This therapy is used to treat numerous conditions, including:

  • Herniated discs
  • Bulging discs
  • Pinched nerves
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Sciatica
  • Degenerative discs

When is spinal decompression not recommended?

Not all patients are prime candidates for spinal decompression. We don’t recommend spinal decompression in the following cases:

  • If you are pregnant
  • Disc space infections
  • When you have hardware, such as screws in your spine
  • Grade 3 and 4 spondylolisthesis
  • Metastatic cancer patients
